A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
