Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, evil spirits, and sinister influences growing in influence within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Revealed

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of heroes who will separate from the central cast to embark on their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem mismatched, but the events of the third episode demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the group knows exactly where to head next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—used the foes for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each member has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and best friend, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a nasty place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could assist the party access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are sought by the powers that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we discover that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
