EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
