Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
