Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
